Abstract

A hundred years after A. Schweitzer's Von Reimarus zu Wrede , the study of the historical Jesus is again experiencing a renaissance. Ongoing since the beginning of the 1980's, this renaissance has produced an abundance of Jesus studies that also display a welcome diversity of methods, approaches and hypotheses. The Handbook of the Study of the Historical Jesus is designed to handle this diversity and abundance. Drawing from first-class scholarship throughout the world, the four large volumes of the Handbook offer a unique assembly of leading experts presenting their approaches to the historical Jesus, as well as a thought-out compilation of original studies on a large variety of topics pertaining to Jesus research and adjacent areas.

Abstract

Entering the debate about the development of Christology among Jesus' earliest followers, this volume critiques both the traditional evolutionary view that posited an elementary early Jewish Christology that developed in complexity as it was increasingly Hellenized and the more recent attempt to see a full-orbed Christology both as early and as Jewish, not Hellenistic, in its categories. It contends that during the first 100 years Jesus' followers employed four models from their milieu, Jewish and Greco-Roman, both to understand and to communicate their Christologies. These models were appropriated because they were appropriate vehicles for expressing the impact of Jesus on them, past, present, and future.

Abstract

The genealogy of Jesus as recorded in the gospels of Matthew and Luke differs. Very early on, this difference gave rise to many questions and discussions amongst Christians. An attempt at reconciliation had considerable success for centuries: that which Julius Africanus (ca. 170-250) put forward in his letter to Aristides on the basis of Judaeo-Christian traditions. Aimed against a less literal interpretation of the gospel genealogies, Africanus' letter underlines a claim that will play an important role all through the Christian history - that of biblical inerrancy.Christophe Guignard provides a new edition, enriched with a new fragment. It is the fruit of an extensive study on the textual tradition that depends entirely on two "ations from Eusebius of Caesarea. Since one of these - included in his 'Gospel Questions' - is now lost, much space was made for the tradition of this work in the writings of the Latin and Oriental Fathers. The Greek text and French translation, the first ever complete translation into a living language, are accompanied by a study that sheds new light on the text and the controversial context that underlies it. It also takes into consideration the traditions Africanus uses, one of which seems to go back to a circle claiming to be related to the family of Jesus.

Abstract

Scholars often explain Hebrews’ relative silence regarding Jesus’ resurrection by emphasizing the author’s appeal to Yom Kippur’s two key moments—the sacrificial slaughter and the high priest’s presentation of blood in the holy of holies—in his distinctive portrayal of Jesus’ death and heavenly exaltation. The writer’s depiction of Jesus as the high priest whose blood effected ultimate atonement appears to be modeled upon these two moments. Such a typology discourages discrete reflection on Jesus’ resurrection. Drawing on contemporary studies of Jewish sacrifice (which note that blood represents life, not death), parallels in Jewish apocalyptic literature, and fresh exegetical insights, this volume demonstrates that Jesus’ embodied, resurrected life is crucial for the high-priestly Christology and sacrificial soteriology developed in Hebrews.
